Special Alert: Bears and Human Garbage

Timberline Disposal provides Silver Plume residential customers with curb side trash & recycling pickup each Tuesday free of charge.  They also provide 3 dumpsters in town for the residents who live on the steep roads in town which do not have the convenience of curbside pickup at their homes on Tuesdays because of snowy/icy conditions.

These dumpsters are for residential garbage only and are emptied weekly:

    • Please do not put construction debris, furniture, tires, mattresses, etc., into the dumpsters!  If the doors cannot be closed and latched the bears will tear out the trash!
    • Please do not place items outside the dumpster – the truck picks up the dumpster and empties it into trash truck, the driver has no way to load these large items.
    • Residential trash pickup is Tuesday morning (when there is a Monday holiday it is moved to Wednesday) occasionally due to unforeseen circumstances your trash may not get picked up so please bring it in overnight
    • LEAVE YOUR TRASH SECURED UNTIL TUESDAY MORNING!!   If it does not get picked up, PLEASE bring it in and secure it DO NOT leave it out overnight!!!!!
    • If you use town dumpsters, CLOSE AND SECURE THE SLIDING DOORS!!  If the door jams, notify the transfer station or contact the town clerk at 303-569-2363 or there is a link on www.SILVERPLUMETOWN.COM, (to contact Timberline Disposal directly).

    HELPFUL TIPS:

    • DO NOT STORE PET FOOD, BIRD SEED, TRASH, or anything that is food to our ursine neighbors behind flimsy doors.
    • *A bear proof trash can like the one at Town Hall can be ordered for $7.50/month (50% discount for Silver Plume residents) contact the Town Clerk
    • Please follow the simple steps that will eliminate the need to pick up trash from our streets on a regular basis.   This is YOUR responsibility!  Please take it seriously!
    • The bears are not responsible for the problem of garbage strewn all over our streets and yards.  Our citizens are unfortunately making this problem worse than it should be by making garbage available to the bears.

Please help Silver Plume set the example and not be a source of food to attract the bears who live in our area.

    Thank you,

    Martin Gitlin, Trustee

(On behalf of the Silver Plume Mayor & Board of Trustees)

Silver Plume is part of the Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District  Written by the late John Calhoun – written in 1995 – (some details may have changed):Period photos are available at the “Digital Images” section of the Denver Public Library.Silver Plume is a very small, old, rural mining town dating from the Colorado gold and silver rush of the last four decades of the 19th century.

In 1859, gold was discovered at the confluence of Clear Creek and the Platte River near what is now Denver. Inspired by the 1849 California gold rush and by Horace Greeley’s immortal if misguided promotional admonition to “Go west, young man, go west,” literally thousands of fortune-seekers headed up Clear Creek into the Rocky Mountains, seeking the veins of ore that were the source of the nuggets and dust found in the waters of the Creek.
